Can CA students do CIA?

Yes. CA students can pursue CIA through the standard CIA pathway, subject to meeting The IIA's eligibility requirements. There is, however, an important distinction between pursuing the regular CIA pathway and using the CIA Challenge Exam. The Challenge Exam is intended for eligible qualified CA/CPA holders from approved accounting bodies, rather than candidates who are still students.

Can ACCA students do CIA?

Yes. ACCA students can pursue CIA through the regular pathway, subject to meeting The IIA's eligibility requirements. However, being an ACCA student does not by itself make you eligible for the CIA Challenge Exam. The Challenge Exam pathway applies to eligible qualified ACCA members who meet The IIA's requirements.

How many parts are there in CIA?

The standard CIA qualification consists of three examination parts: • Part 1 – Essentials of Internal Auditing • Part 2 – Practice of Internal Auditing • Part 3 – Business Knowledge for Internal Auditing The three parts take you progressively from the fundamentals of internal auditing to practical audit work and the wider business knowledge expected from an internal auditor.

Part 1 focuses on the fundamentals of internal auditing. It covers areas such as the purpose of internal audit, ethics, governance, risk management and internal controls. I would describe Part 1 as the foundation of the CIA journey because it establishes many of the concepts you will continue to use throughout the qualification.

Part 2 focuses on the actual practice of internal auditing. It covers areas such as planning and performing internal audit engagements, communicating results and carrying out appropriate follow-up. This is where students start connecting internal-audit concepts with the way an audit engagement is actually conducted.

Part 3 focuses on the wider business knowledge that an internal auditor needs. It includes areas such as business acumen, information technology and financial management. A strong internal auditor needs to understand not just the audit process but also the business environment in which the organisation operates, which is why Part 3 is important.

What is the CIA exam pattern?

The CIA is a computer-based multiple-choice examination consisting of three parts. Part 1 has 125 questions and 150 minutes. Parts 2 and 3 each have 100 questions and 120 minutes. So, while conceptual understanding is important, students also need to develop strong question practice and time-management skills.

Can I take CIA exams in any order?

Yes. The three CIA examination parts do not have to be taken in a compulsory sequence. This gives students and working professionals flexibility when planning their exams. My recommendation, however, is to choose your sequence strategically based on your existing knowledge, experience and preparation plan.

How difficult is the CIA exam?

CIA is a professional-level examination, so it requires more than simply memorising concepts. You need to understand internal-audit principles and be able to apply them to practical situations. The difficulty will vary from candidate to candidate depending on their background, audit experience, preparation and exam technique. With structured preparation and sufficient question practice, the qualification is certainly manageable.

How long does CIA take?

There is no single timeline that applies to every candidate. Your completion time will depend on your study schedule, prior knowledge, professional experience, examination attempts and how much time you can dedicate to preparation. I would recommend focusing on a realistic study plan rather than trying to complete the qualification simply as quickly as possible. You should also keep The IIA's programme-completion requirements in mind.

What is the CIA eligibility requirement?

CIA eligibility depends on your educational and professional background. The IIA provides different eligibility pathways based on qualifications such as a bachelor's or master's degree, along with corresponding professional-experience requirements. Rather than assuming that one rule applies to everyone, I recommend checking your individual academic and professional profile against The IIA's current eligibility requirements before registering.

Do I need work experience for CIA?

Yes. Professional experience is required to obtain the CIA designation, although the amount depends on your eligibility pathway. For example, candidates entering with a master's degree generally have a lower experience requirement than those entering with a bachelor's degree. The important point is that you can work towards completing your examination requirements while also building the relevant professional experience.

Can I take CIA before completing work experience?

Yes. Eligible candidates can take the CIA examinations before completing their required professional experience. This is particularly useful for students and early-career professionals because you don't necessarily have to wait until you have completed all your experience before beginning the examination process. However, the required experience must be completed before the CIA designation can be awarded.

How much does CIA cost?

The overall cost of CIA depends on factors such as IIA membership, application fees, examination fees and applicable taxes or country-specific charges. I always recommend looking at the complete cost of the qualification, rather than considering only one examination fee. Since fees can change, candidates should check The IIA's latest applicable fee structure before registration.

Can I take CIA from India?

Yes. Students and professionals in India can pursue CIA and take the examinations through The IIA's computer-based testing arrangements, subject to current testing availability. So, being based in India does not prevent you from pursuing this international certification.

Is CIA available year-round?

Yes. The CIA examination is delivered through computer-based testing rather than being restricted to only a few fixed annual examination windows. This gives candidates greater flexibility in planning their exams. However, registration validity, scheduling requirements and test-centre availability should still be considered when planning your examination date.

What jobs can I get after CIA?

CIA can be relevant to a wide range of roles, including internal audit, risk management, internal controls, governance, compliance, assurance, SOX/internal controls, operational audit and technology-related audit. But I always tell students that a professional qualification is one part of your career profile. Your practical experience, technical skills, communication and ability to apply your knowledge will also influence the roles available to you.

Can CIA help me get into Big 4?

CIA can be relevant to internal audit, risk, controls, governance and advisory roles within large professional-services firms, including the Big Four. However, I would not position CIA as a guarantee of employment. Recruitment depends on the specific role and can involve factors such as academic performance, professional experience, technical skills and interview performance.

Can CIA help me work in MNCs and GCCs?

Yes. MNCs and Global Capability Centres have functions covering internal audit, risk, governance, controls and compliance, making CIA relevant to many of these career paths. CIA can strengthen your profile for such roles, particularly when combined with relevant practical experience. However, employment will always depend on the specific role and the overall candidate profile.

CIA vs CPA — what is the difference?

The main difference is the area of specialisation. CIA is specifically focused on internal audit, governance, risk and controls. The US CPA is a broader accounting and licensure pathway covering areas such as accounting, financial reporting, audit and taxation within the applicable US state framework. So, I would advise students to look at their intended career rather than asking which qualification is universally better.

CIA vs CMA — what is the difference?

CIA and CMA have different areas of focus. CIA is centred around internal audit, governance, risk and controls, while the US CMA focuses more on management accounting, financial planning, performance management and strategic financial decision-making. If you want to specialise in internal audit and controls, CIA is directly aligned with that career direction. CMA follows a different management-accounting and finance-oriented path.

CIA vs ACCA — what is the difference?

ACCA is a broad professional accountancy qualification covering areas such as financial reporting, audit, taxation, financial management and strategic finance. CIA is a specialist certification focused on internal audit, governance, risk and controls. So, ACCA gives you broader exposure across accountancy and finance, while CIA allows you to specialise more deeply in internal audit.

CIA vs CA — what is the difference?

CA in India is a broad professional qualification covering accounting, auditing, taxation, law and other areas relevant to the Indian professional and regulatory environment. CIA is a specialist international certification focused specifically on internal audit, governance, risk and controls. For a CA professional looking to specialise further in internal audit or controls, CIA can complement the broader CA qualification.

Can CIA be done with another certification?

Yes. CIA can be pursued alongside or after qualifications such as CA, ACCA, CPA, CMA or CISA, provided you meet the applicable CIA eligibility requirements. My advice is not to collect qualifications simply to increase the number of credentials on your CV. Each qualification should have a clear purpose and should contribute to the career direction you are building.

Does CIA have a Challenge Exam?

Yes. The IIA offers a one-part CIA Challenge Exam for certain eligible professionals, including qualifying professionals from approved accounting bodies and eligible CISA holders. The eligibility requirements are specific, and The IIA has also introduced an experience-based Challenge Exam pilot for qualifying experienced internal-audit professionals. If you believe you may qualify for the Challenge Exam, I would recommend checking your exact eligibility with The IIA before planning your preparation around it.
